Globalisation seems to be the latest buzz word, it is here, it is now, it is great and everyone needs to “do it”. But much like the other earth wide fad, global warming, we as a people and as individuals need to make a choice. Do we make the effort to understand globalisation and the consequences of embracing it or do we pay lip service to a trendy catch-phrase but basically ignore it?

The debate or the choice has particular relevance to countries around the world who do not use English as their first language. Do we teach our children English as a second language? Here in Malaysia, do we continue to teach maths and science in English or revert to Bahasa Malaysia? What effects will our decisions have on the preservation or corruption of our national culture? Will it make us more competitive on the international economic scene? All these are valid questions.

Unfortunately, or fortunately (depending on how you think) whether you like it or, English is already the default language in the globalised world. As proof, I offer the following example. Every pilot and air traffic controller in the world speaks English. The reason this is so is because air traffic is by definition globalised. The choice for air traffic control boils down to this; either a pilot learns the language of every country he or she flies across, or air traffic controllers and pilots adopt a common language. Since a typical flight from Malaysia to Europe may cross up to 10 countries, our pilots would have to be linguistic geniuses as well as skilled pilots to make the flight safely. You simply can not have a pilot who is responsible for 300 passengers be unable to land his or her plane because he or she does not speak German or Italian or Arabic or Swiss or English.

In a similar way, science is a global subject. There is no such thing as English maths, Saudi Arabian chemistry or Moroccan physics. it’s math, chemistry and physics which are the same everywhere around the world. In a truly globalised world there will also be no such thing as a Malaysian chemist, A Dutch mathematician or a Swiss geologist, there will simply be chemists, mathematicians and geologists who exist as a global scientific community. The fact that they all come from different countries is an irrelevant accident of birth- there is globalisation. Because we all be global scientists we will require a common language. In the same way that air traffic controllers had to adopt a common language for safety, scientists will adopt one language so that all scientists around the world can participate in and contribute to global science.

If you want or believe in globalisation, you must also want and believe in a common scientific language. Science in several language is incompatible with globalisation.

But what of national pride and culture? To solve this problem I hereby rename The English language as GLOBALISH.

All loans should recorded in the CCRIS system. From car to house loans that are already housed in this computerised system. Before that, let me brief you on CCRIS usage. CCRIS is a system that houses the database of all credit information on about 9 million borrower in Malaysia. Be it the car loans, house loan and credit loans. CCRIS automatically processes the credit data received from the financial institutions and synthesises the information into credit reports, which can be made available to the financial institutions upon request.

With a good record on CCRIS, borrowers can easily borrow loans. This is a good example, everyone will desire for good reputation of their own record.

What else in future CCRIS system, these include PTPTN loan and credit card. I may not now whether or not credit card loan is included. Since that PTPTN loan is increasingly remain at high deficit. According to Dewan Rakyat last Tuesday, “Of that total, students owing RM346 million had been given a postponement for repayment while RM1.54 billion has not been repaid,". With this solution, i believe and i am sure many will repay the PTPTN loan. For Credit card wise, in order to solve the notorious misused of credit card among Malaysians and fulfilment of wise spending habit, it is effective that CCRIS works well to cope with the unwise spending. RM50/RM25 levy on credit card is little too expensive. If i had a choice, i would pay for RM10.00. With the fear of CCRIS system by loaners, RM10.00 levy is reasonable. They fear of bad record of theirs.

Refer to the reply from BNM on 11/11/09, their reply to me was “We thank you for your feedback in the email and would like to inform you that currently we are updating our Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS) to include exposures on PTPN as well.”

Good Luck All.

The world is facing a critical challenge. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions are raising the earth’s average temperature. As a result, dramatic climate change is forecast and global scientific opinion predicts enormous developmental, economic, social and environmental stresses on our planet.

Leading climate change experts have put forward a series of practical solutions to tackle climate change. These solutions include the technical standards published by the world’s three leading international standardization organizations: the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

In its groundbreaking report published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) cited technical standards, like those published by the IEC, ISO and ITU, as a means of mitigating climate change now, while offering the potential to reduce its effects in the future as new technologies are developed and mature.

The three global organizations are coordinating their work to ensure that government, business and society are provided with the necessary tools to help combat global climate change and to support the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by increasing energy efficiency, while facilitating sustainable development.

The standards produced by the three organizations reach across all sectors identified in the IPCC report where mitigation technologies, policies and measures, constraints and opportunities exist, including energy supply, transport, buildings, industry, agriculture, forestry, and waste.

The IEC, ISO and ITU offer a system of standardization whose output includes standards for the following aspects of the fight against climate change:

Monitoring and measurement of greenhouse gas emissions

Measuring the carbon footprint of networks and products

Designing and building energy efficient homes and workplaces

Benchmarking for good practices including environmental and energy efficiency labeling

Promoting good practice for environmental management and design, and for energy management

Disseminating innovative technologies that promise to help reduce the effects of climate change

Fostering the introduction of new energy-efficient technologies and services

International standards offer policy makers, industry and users the common tools they need to work together on tackling climate change. The three partner organizations also offer a comprehensive system in which nations and the private sector can participate to establish the priorities for tackling climate change in the years ahead. As such, they offer practical solutions with the potential to be used as part of any international agreement following on from the Kyoto Protocol.

Standards from the IEC, ISO and ITU offer the world’s governments and industry the best possible benchmarks to be referenced in any policy making decisions or future climate treaties. The three organizations are working together with other international organizations to ensure that participants at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference on 7-18 December 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark, will be fully aware of the solutions offered by existing and future International Standards.

This is the first time in the Japanese food industry that a manufacturer uses green electricity to produce products in-house.

The company entered into a contract with Japan Natural Energy Co. to purchase 40 million kilowatts of renewable energy per year. This is the largest green power purchase contract so far in the Japanese food industry. Under the contract, the company expects to reduce its emissions by about 18,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 4,500 households.

Asahi Breweries plans to print the Green Energy Mark logo on applicable products from all nine of its breweries in late May 2009 as proof of its green power usage. The company is going to switch half of its total electricity consumption, usually produced from non-renewable energy supplied by power utilities, over to green-sourced power, and also generate the other half of electricity with its private-power facilities using natural gas.
